Minnesota sports

This past week I saw a video compilation of the 50 best sports plays from the year 2013; none of the plays featured a Minnesota player.   The last linkdump featured a story about a Minnesota man who let his beard grow until the Vikings won a SuperBowl; he died last week with a 38-year-old beard.

So I wasn't surprised to see the graphic above from ESPN (where the image is interactive).  Just like the weather, sports in Minnesota serves as a character-building factor. (And curiously, it seems to be the rest of America, not Lake Wobegon, where "all the children are above average.")

  1. My oldest daughter is now living in Minneapolis. Sports will improve if she so wills it. And she will.

  2. Greetings from Houston, TX. Our Astros and Texans aren't much to brag about lately.

  3. This isn't quite a Wobegonish situation. People are being asked to describe their "favorite" teams, not the typical teams in their area. They may even be describing teams that live far away from their home. Winning teams tend to garner more fans.

  4. Clearly none of my fellow Washingtonians care to rate the Mariners as their favorite sports team.

  5. The Texas rating must be dominated by people from Dallas. Nobody who follows sports in the Houston area can be much satisfied with the Astros, Rockets or Texans in 2013.

    1. I fully agree. The Rockets are fair this year. But the Astros continue their record-setting number of losses, and the Texans followed suit this year (after a nice run last year).

  6. Note Alabama. It must be the University of Alabama "Roll Tide" versus Auburn University "War Eagle". Some day neither team will be as good.

  7. It's not just collegiate. The survey would include Braves fans (they won the NL East that year)
